Payroll Changes 2025 are coming in thick and fast, or at least that’s how it feels, and it is a lot to keep up with. However, if you’re running a business here in the Highlands or anywhere else in the UK, now’s the time to get prepared.
At Highland Payroll Services, we’ve gone through all the updates so you don’t have to and here’s a quick and clear look at the key Payroll Changes 2025 and how they might affect your business.
National Insurance and Income Tax Adjustments
The biggest change in Payroll Changes for 2025 is the adjustment to National Insurance. From April, the employer NI rate has gone up to 15%, and the earnings threshold has dropped to £5,000. This means that you, the employer, could be paying more than expected unless your payroll system is fully up to date.
The Government is still reviewing the income tax bands, which may also shift again later in the year. Therefore, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on announcements, or, better still, let us do that for you.
Auto-Enrolment Pension Reforms
Automatic enrolment is evolving at a pace. Auto-enrolment has been a legal requirement for quite a while now, but Payroll Changes 2025 are bringing it into sharper focus. The Government confirmed that, from April 2025, the minimum age for auto-enrolment will be reduced from 22 to 18, and the lower earnings threshold will be removed.
So, what does that mean for you, the employer?
Well, quite a lot to be honest. Even younger and lower-paid staff will now qualify for workplace pension contributions. So if you run a business with part-time, seasonal, or entry-level employees, this is one change you really don’t want to overlook.
Again, make sure your payroll systems are up to scratch and ready to handle the extra calculations. If you’re not sure, ask us! We’re already helping businesses across the Highlands and beyond get compliant, quickly and easily.
Updates to Statutory Pay Rates
Each April, like clockwork, statutory pay rates, including sick pay, maternity pay, and paternity pay, are typically revised. The Payroll Changes 2025 continue this trend, with sick pay now at £118.75 per week, while maternity, paternity, and adoption pay stand at £187.18 per week. If your payroll system hasn’t had a refresh since last year, these new figures need to be added now.
National Minimum Wage Increases
Another key Payroll Change for 2025 is the boost in minimum wage. As of April:
- 21 and over: £12.21
- 18 to 20: £10.00
- Under 18 / apprentices: £7.55
It’s important to double-check your employee’s pay, especially if you hire seasonal or part-time staff. Let’s face it, you don’t want grumpy staff!
Increased Focus on Digital Reporting
HMRC is continuing to promote and push forward with its digital transformation. Real-Time Information (RTI) reporting and further developments under the “Making Tax Digital” initiative could lead to additional requirements being introduced for employers in 2025.
Of course, this means payroll data must be submitted accurately and on time. Therefore, businesses using outdated systems may need to consider upgrading to remain compliant with current regulations.

These Payroll Changes 2025 might seem like a lot, and of course, they vary from business to business and the size of the business, but you’re not alone.
